What's a Mashup?
The term "mashup" has an evolving definition. In its current form, a mashup is a web application that uses content
from multiple sources to create a new service or source displayed in one graphical
interface. The term mashup stems
originally from pop music, where artists would combine music tracks or beats
with another song or other vocal tracks to create a completely new song. For more information on the musical beginnings of the term mashup, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_(music).
The web term mashup comes from the evolution of the Internet. Originally used more for storage and less for interaction, the web was flat. Then Web 2.0 tools were created that allowed more interaction and creation, allowing users to mix and remix information and content. Web providers, such as Yahoo!, Google, and Amazon, created open access to web content, also allowing users to produce more original creations using samples from other available materials.
