Appropriation
The Pew Internet & American Life project reported approximately one-half of teens have produced media content while about one-third of teens with access to the Internet have shared their created content (Jenkins, 2009; Zickuhr & Smith, 2012). Henry Jenkins reported these teens are involved in participatory culture.
A participatory culture:
There are many benefits and skills stemming from participatory culture, including appropriation.
Henry Jenkins (2009) defined appropriation as "the ability to meaningfully sample and remix media content."
Educators should understand and value appropriation. Students learn "by taking culture apart and putting it back together" (Jenkins, 2009, p. 55). Appropriation goes hand-in-hand with collaboration in education and allows students to explore existing media content and new information, analyze and interpret information, and use their own creativity to produce an original product.
